2026 Ford Maverick vs 2026 Ford Ranger
One truck is built on a car platform and returns 38 mpg combined as a hybrid. The other is built on a steel ladder frame and tows 7,500 lbs. Both seat five, both have four doors, and the right answer depends entirely on what is behind you on a Saturday.
The Short Answer
Answer one question and the rest follows
What is the heaviest thing you will tow this year? Everything else about this comparison sorts itself out once you have a number.
Nothing you tow weighs more than 4,000 lbs
You want a truck for hauling, not for pulling. A hybrid Maverick returns 42 mpg in the city, parks anywhere in downtown Clarksville, and still carries up to 1,500 lbs in the bed. The 4K Tow Package covers a jet ski trailer or a small utility trailer.
You tow a boat, a trailer or equipment
7,500 lbs of towing, 1,767 lbs of payload and a 5-foot bed that takes plywood flat. If you launch at a Cumberland River ramp, run a trade, or pull a camper to Land Between the Lakes, this is the truck the job needs.
The parking and the fuel bill break the tie
The Maverick is a foot and a half shorter and costs meaningfully less to run every week. The Ranger asks for more of both and gives back capability you will only notice on the days you need it. Drive both on the same road before you choose.
Head to Head
2026 Maverick vs 2026 Ranger, spec by spec

Towing
7,500 against 4,000, and why the number is the decision
The Ranger's ladder frame, its 10-speed automatic and its longer wheelbase are all there to put a load behind it. Rated at 7,500 lbs when properly equipped, it covers a 20-foot bass boat off the ramp at McGregor Park, a two-horse trailer, or a skid steer on a landscape trailer.
The Maverick tows 2,000 lbs out of the box and 4,000 lbs with the available 4K Tow Package. That is a genuine number, not a token one. It covers a pair of jet skis, a 16-foot aluminum fishing boat, or a small enclosed trailer. It covers a small teardrop camper. It does not cover a full-size loaded travel trailer, and pretending otherwise is how people end up unhappy.
Running Cost
38 mpg combined is the Maverick's whole argument
The 2.5L full hybrid is standard on the Maverick XL, XLT and Lariat. EPA rates it at 42 city, 35 highway and 38 combined in front-wheel drive. On a daily run between Sango and the Fort Campbell gate, that is the difference between filling up weekly and filling up when you remember to.
New for 2026: the hybrid is no longer front-wheel drive only. You can order it with all-wheel drive, rated 40 city, 34 highway and 37 combined, and it can still take the 4K Tow Package. Anyone who wrote off the hybrid last year because of the drivetrain should look again.
- Maverick hybrid FWD: 42 city, 35 highway, 38 combined
- Maverick hybrid AWD: 40 city, 34 highway, 37 combined
- Maverick 2.0L EcoBoost FWD: 23 city, 32 highway, 26 combined
- Ranger 2.3L 2WD: 21 city, 25 highway, 23 combined
- Ranger 2.3L 4WD: 19 city, 24 highway, 21 combined
The Bed
Fourteen inches of bed decides more than you would think
The Ranger bed is 59.6 inches long, holds 43.5 cu ft, and measures 4 feet between the wheel wells. A sheet of plywood or drywall lies flat on the floor, which matters on any job that involves sheet goods.
The Maverick bed is 4 feet 5 inches with 33.3 cu ft, and its Flexbed tie-downs and slots let you build dividers and bike racks out of two-by-fours. With the tailgate down and a strap, both trucks take an eight-foot board from the lumber yard on Fort Campbell Boulevard. Only one of them takes it with the tailgate closed.
Off Pavement
Both go dirt-road places, one goes further
The Ranger offers the FX4 Off-Road Package, now available as far down the range as the XL for 2026, and the Raptor sits on Fox Racing Shox with 405 horsepower from its 3.0L twin-turbo V6. Four-wheel drive is available on XL, XLT and Lariat and standard on Raptor.
The Maverick answers with the Tremor and its Advanced 4WD, off-road suspension and off-road tires, plus the Lobo, which goes the other direction with a lowered sport suspension and a 7-speed Quick Shift transmission. Note the naming trap: Tremor is a trim on both trucks, and the Maverick Tremor and Ranger Raptor are not competing for the same buyer.

Inside
Two cabins, two different ideas of a truck
Every Maverick gets a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen as standard. The Ranger runs a 10.1-inch screen on XL and XLT and a 12-inch screen on Lariat and Raptor. Both seat five, both are four-door crew cabs, and both fit a car seat in the back without a fight.
For Clarksville Drivers
How each one fits a week around here
The Fort Campbell commute
Gate traffic, stop and go, five days a week. This is where a hybrid Maverick pays for itself, and where a 4WD Ranger burns 21 mpg combined doing exactly nothing a truck is for.
The Cumberland River ramps
McGregor Park and the ramps downstream see everything from kayaks to 20-foot bass boats. Under 4,000 lbs the Maverick is fine. Over it, you want the Ranger and its 7,500-lb rating.
Trades and side work
If your load is sheet goods, the Ranger's 4-foot bed width is the spec that matters. If it is tools, mulch and a ladder, the Maverick carries it and costs less to run to every job.
Parking downtown and at APSU
Franklin Street and the Austin Peay lots are not generous. The Maverick is a foot and a half shorter than the Ranger, which is the difference between a spot and a lap of the block.
Want more detail on either truck first? Our Ford Maverick research page and Ford Ranger research page break down trims and equipment. If the real answer turns out to be more truck than either, the F-150 tows up to 13,500 lbs, and we have written up what that means for Cumberland River boaters.

Maverick vs Ranger
Questions Clarksville truck buyers ask us
What is the real difference between the Ford Maverick and the Ford Ranger?
Size and construction. The Maverick is a compact unibody truck built on a car platform with a 4.5-foot bed. The Ranger is a midsize truck on a steel ladder frame with a 5-foot bed. That one difference drives everything else: towing, payload, ride, and what you pay at the pump.
How much can the 2026 Maverick and Ranger tow?
The Maverick tows 2,000 lbs as standard and up to 4,000 lbs with the available 4K Tow Package. The Ranger tows up to 7,500 lbs on XL, XLT and Lariat when properly equipped. If you are pulling a 20-foot bass boat off a Cumberland River ramp or a loaded equipment trailer, that gap is the whole conversation.
Which one gets better gas mileage?
The Maverick hybrid, and it is not close. EPA rates it at 42 city, 35 highway and 38 combined in front-wheel drive, or 40, 34 and 37 with all-wheel drive. A 2.3L Ranger in 2WD is rated 21, 25 and 23 combined. On a daily Fort Campbell commute the hybrid saves real money every month.
Can you get all-wheel drive on the Maverick hybrid for 2026?
Yes. That is new and worth knowing, because the hybrid used to be front-wheel drive only. For 2026 the hybrid is offered with all-wheel drive and can be ordered with the 4K Tow Package. EPA rates the hybrid AWD at 40 city, 34 highway and 37 combined.
Which truck has the bigger bed?
The Ranger. Its bed is 59.6 inches long with 43.5 cu ft of volume and 4 feet between the wheel wells, so a sheet of plywood lies flat. The Maverick bed is 4 feet 5 inches with 33.3 cu ft. For a Lowe's run on Wilma Rudolph Boulevard either one works with the tailgate down. For framing lumber, the Ranger.
Is the Maverick a real truck or a car with a bed?
It is a real truck with a car's manners. Up to 1,500 lbs of payload is genuine working capacity, and the bed has been used for everything from mulch to a dirt bike. What it will not do is the heavy towing and the hard trail work a body-on-frame truck handles, and Ford has never claimed otherwise.
Does the Ranger come in a 2-door or a shorter cab?
Not for 2026. Every Ranger is a four-door SuperCrew with a 5-foot bed, because Ford dropped the SuperCab. The Maverick is also crew cab only. Both seat five, so nobody is choosing between a back seat and a bed here.
Which one is better for Fort Campbell soldiers and first-time truck buyers?
Usually the Maverick, and mostly on running cost. It parks in on-post housing without a fight, the hybrid is cheap to run on a daily gate commute, and it still hauls a weekend's worth of gear. Anyone towing a boat or a trailer regularly should drive the Ranger before deciding, and both carry our military discount.
Can I drive a Maverick and a Ranger on the same visit?
Yes, and it is the fastest way to settle it. Both sit on our lot at 2655 Trenton Rd, about five minutes off Exit 4 on I-24. Inventory changes weekly, so call 931-441-8041 first and we will have one of each pulled up and ready.
Bring the trailer. That settles it in ten minutes.
Both trucks live on the same lot on Trenton Rd. Call ahead, tell us what you tow, and we will have the right two waiting when you get here.
